Will a Washer or Dryer Fit in an SUV? The Height Is the Problem, Not the Space

You found a washer and dryer set on Marketplace for $250 and the listing says it must go this weekend. You have an SUV. Delivery would cost more than the dryer did. So the only question left is whether the thing will physically go in the back of your car, and the seller wants an answer in the next ten minutes.

Here is the short version. A full-size washer will not stand upright in a compact SUV. Not in a CR-V, not in a RAV4, not in an Escape. It is not close, and no packing trick recovers the gap. But it will very likely lie down in one, and whether that is a good idea depends almost entirely on whether you are talking about the washer or the dryer.

Skip the tape measure. Check the fit before you drive.

Get Will It Trunk

Cubic feet is the wrong number

Cargo space gets advertised in cubic feet, which is the single least useful figure for this particular problem. Appliances do not care about volume. They care about three specific measurements of the hole you are trying to put them through, and a large total volume tells you nothing about whether any one of those three clears.

Start with the appliance. Whirlpool's own laundry sizing guide puts a standard top-load washer at roughly 27 to 28 inches wide, 27 to 28 inches deep, and 42 to 44 inches tall. A full-size front-load washer or dryer runs about 27 inches wide, 32 to 34 inches deep, and 39 inches tall. Compact 24-inch units are the small end of the family at around 24 inches wide, 24 to 26 deep, and 33 to 36 tall. A side-by-side pair spans about 54 inches together, which matters if you were hoping to take both home standing up.

That height number is the entire story. A top-load washer is nearly four feet tall. Almost nobody pictures it that way, because in a laundry room it is waist-high furniture you set a detergent bottle on. Measured as cargo, it is a tall object.

What your SUV actually gives you

Take the Honda CR-V, which is about as representative as compact SUVs get. Measured floor to ceiling in the cargo area, the 2017 through 2022 generation gives you roughly 33 inches of height. The 2023-onward generation improved on that at about 36 inches, though the hybrid drops back to 34 because the battery pack raises the load floor. Cargo floor length is about 36 inches with the rear seats up and around 73 inches with them folded, at roughly 40 to 44 inches wide depending on generation.

A RAV4 tells the same story in different units: about 37.6 cubic feet behind the second row and 69.8 with it folded. That sounds enormous, and it is genuinely a lot of space. It does not make the ceiling any higher.

So a 42-inch washer standing up in a 33-inch opening is off by nine inches. There is nothing to negotiate there. Removing the cargo cover, angling it diagonally, letting some air out of the tires, taking the headrests off — none of that finds nine inches. Upright is simply off the table in a compact SUV, and it is worth knowing that before you are standing in a stranger's garage with a hand truck.

Lying down, it fits easily

Rotate the washer onto its back and the geometry flips in your favor. That 42-inch height becomes 42 inches of length running along the cargo floor. The footprint on the floor is roughly 27 inches wide by 42 inches long, and the machine now stands only about 27 to 28 inches off the floor, comfortably under a 33-inch ceiling.

Fold the rear seats and you are working with something like 73 inches of floor length and 40 to 44 inches of width. A 27-by-42-inch object in a 73-by-40-inch space is not a tight fit. It is comfortable, with room left over for the dryer beside it or a hand truck behind it. Two appliances lying flat in a compact SUV is a real, achievable load.

Geometrically, then, the answer is yes. The complication is that geometry is not the only constraint on this particular item.

The part that costs people four hundred dollars

Whirlpool's guidance on moving a front-load washer is unusually direct. The washer should be moved in an upright position, the company says, because transporting it on its side or in another configuration may cause damage to the machine. That is not a liability hedge. It describes a specific failure mode.

The reason is the suspension. A front-loader's drum hangs on springs and shock absorbers so it can spin at over a thousand RPM without walking across the floor. Those springs are engineered to carry the drum's weight straight down. Lay the machine on its side and the whole assembly loads sideways against parts that were never designed to take the force in that direction. The damage does not announce itself in the parking lot. It shows up three weeks later as a machine that bangs and lurches through the spin cycle, and the repair quote is often close to what a replacement costs.

This is also why factory shipping bolts exist. They lock the drum rigidly to the frame so it cannot move in transit. Whirlpool is explicit that new shipping bolts must be reinstalled before a move to avoid internal suspension and structural damage, and equally explicit that if you forget to take them back out afterward, the washer will not run and will vibrate badly. A used Marketplace washer essentially never comes with its shipping bolts still in the box. That is the honest risk you are accepting when you lay one down, and it is worth pricing into the $250.

The dryer is a different animal

A dryer has no suspended tub, no shock absorbers, and no water sitting anywhere inside it. It is a drum on rollers inside a light steel box, and it weighs roughly half what a comparable washer does. Dryers travel on their back or side far more forgivingly, which is why the dryer half of a set is almost always the easy half of the job.

If you are only taking one appliance home in the SUV today, take the dryer. Come back for the washer with a truck, or with a second person who can help you keep it upright and strapped. Splitting the trip is not a failure. It is the version of the plan that does not end with a repair bill.

The three measurements to take before you leave the house

Skip the cubic feet entirely and get these three instead, with an actual tape measure, once. They are the same for every future trip you ever take in that car.

First, the liftgate opening height: the vertical gap at the very back with the hatch open. This is usually smaller than the cargo area's interior height, and it is the true gate. An item cannot be in the car if it cannot get through the door. Second, the floor length with the seats folded. Fold them first, then measure, because folded seatbacks on a lot of SUVs do not sit flush and the slope eats real inches. Third, the width between the wheel wells, not the width at the widest point. The wheel arches pinch usable width by several inches right where a wide, flat appliance needs to sit.

Then compare those three numbers against the appliance's three numbers, remembering that the appliance's height becomes its length once it is on its back. If any single pair fails, the whole fit fails. There is no averaging across dimensions, and this is exactly the mistake that puts people in a driveway at 6 p.m. with a washer on the ground and no plan.
